Everybody is doing it. Or, at least, everybody is talking about doing it. Are you doing it too?
I’m talking about your New Year’s resolution.
Maybe you want to work on that audition piece to get into grad school.
Maybe you want perfect your grand jete.
Maybe you want to conquer a half marathon.
Maybe you simply want to improve your relationships.
Underlying the hope that the fresh start of a new year can bring, is also a sense of uncertainty. “Can I do this?” “Am I really capable of accomplishing X,Y and Z?” As I have been talking to several friends about their plans for this new year, already I hear their discouragement and anxiety. “I’m qualified for the job, but I feel like it’s a long shot,” says one; “What if I don’t get into any grad schools?” laments another; “What am I doing with my life?” asks yet another.
These worries are rooted in some legitimate realities; your plans, goals and resolutions for the year might not go as you expect.
It is just possible that…
You might not win the audition.
You might not be picked for the job.
You might not get into the grad school.
What do I hear myself telling my friends? “Your job is to do your part. Nothing more.” Apply for the job, apply for the grad school, be diligent in your practicing and training and pursuit of healthy relationships. Take care of what is possible; God is more than capable of taking care of the rest.
So I would just like to say, welcome to the new year! Keep your planner open and hold your pen lightly.
What is your New Year’s resolution?
