Don Lucas internationally recognized soloist, performer, teacher and adjudicator has appeared in Russia, United Kingdom, Brazil, South Korea, China, Japan, Costa Rica, Australia, Greece, Denmark, Austria, Canada and the USA. He has performed with The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Empire Brass Quintet, Santa Fe Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, the American Classic Trombone Quartet (founder), the Minnesota Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Portland Symphony (Maine) and the North Carolina Symphony.
Mr. Lucas received his education at: London’s Guildhall School of Music, Premiere Prix Diploma, Doctoral Work, University of Houston, Texas Tech University, MM, BM.
Mr. Lucas has recorded with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the American Wind Symphony and produced two solo recordings: Hymns for Trombone and Cantabile. Solo and brass chamber music selections were recorded for North/South Recordings and Warwick Music Publishers, U.K. 1st Prizes, Instrumental Solo and Group Competitions “God’s Trombones” National Competitions at the Christian Artists National Music Seminars, Estes Park, CO.
Adjudications include: Tchaikovsky Conservatory International Trombone Competition, Moscow, Russia, Rimsky-Korsakov International Trombone Competition, Saint Petersburg, Russia, JeJu International Trombone Competition, South Korea, ITA International Trombone Competitions, National Trombone Competitions, ATW, Washington DC.
Premiered and or Commissioned works of: Fisher Tull, Jacques Casterede, Derek Bourgeouis, Adam Gorb, David Maslanka, Franz Cibulka, Eddie Bass, Alun Hoddinott, Gary Belshaw, Bruce Stark and Daniel Schnyder.
Mr. Lucas’ student’s accomplishments include: positions with orchestras, military bands, and universities, touring shows, music industry and competitions including: 1st Prizes in the Emory Remington ITA International Trombone Choir Competitions, the ITA Alberto Gagliardi International Solo Competition, the (USA) National Jazz Trombone Band Competition, National Solo Tenor Trombone and National Solo Bass Trombone Competitions. Finalists in ITA International Trombone Quartet Competitions, the ITA Frank Smith Award, the ITA International Alto Trombone Solo Competition and the ITA International Tenor Trombone Excerpts Competitions.
Mr. Lucas is Associate Professor of Trombone at Boston University, Chair of the Woodwinds, Brass & Percussion Department and Adjunct Instructor of Trombone at Gordon College, Wenham, MA, taught previously at Texas Tech University, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea (Guest Professor) Eastern New Mexico University and Sam Houston State University.
Mr. Lucas was elected and served for 3 years as President of the International Trombone Association from 2008-2011 and is an Artist/Clinician for the S. E. Shires Instrument Company.
