Age: 23
Program: Orchestra (Bassoon)

What is one of your favorite memories from a previous year at MasterWorks?

One of my favorite experiences from last year’s MasterWorks Festival was the final performance with John Nelson. So many other events led up to that final performance that made it so much more special to play alongside my peers, but that program was rather special to John Nelson and I could feel that. It seemed like it was programmed to pay homage to his recently deceased wife, and with the Prelude to Tristan und Isolde and the Brahms Requiem, the performance was really life changing for me.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at MasterWorks 2016?

This year, I am looking forward to seeing some of the friends I made last year and meeting the new students this year that I will be counseling! MasterWorks presents very substantial standards to the orchestra repertoire and you really can’t find a better experience to perform with God fearing, awesome musicians! Every part of the program makes MasterWorks so great for me!

Age: 20
Program: Orchestra (French Horn)

What is one of your favorite memories from a previous year at MasterWorks?

One of my favorite memories from MasterWorks is getting to perform the Dvorak cello concerto and sensing God’s glory through the music like I never had before with any other piece of music or with any other group of musicians.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at MasterWorks 2016?

I’m most looking forward to creating new memories with the fantastic community of believers present in both the students and faculty of MasterWorks. Getting to know one another through the Bible studies and having fun outside of rehearsals is one of the best parts of a month at MasterWorks.

Age: 19
Program: Piano

What is one of your favorite memories from a previous year at MasterWorks?

Last year my favourite memory was singing in the Brahms Requiem with John Nelson conducting. It was on the last night of the festival. It had been an intense four weeks, the choir had been through a lot of rehearsal, and I was particularly tired because I had just soloed in the concerto winners’ concert the night before. However, singing texts from the Word of God set to Brahms’ magnificent music along with my brothers and sisters in the faith—words like “Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted”—was one of the most powerful, emotional and awe-inspiring performances I had ever been a part of.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at MasterWorks 2016?

This year I am most looking forward to the people—reminiscing with old friends and getting to know new ones. I’m also really looking forward to making some beautiful chamber music, and I am excited to experience the new campus. It is always such a joy to grow in faith and grace with fellow musicians!

Name: Ellen RaquetEllen Raquet
Age: 20
Program: Orchestra (Violin)

What is one of your favorite memories from a previous year at MasterWorks?

One of my favorite memories from Masterworks was playing in the pops concert on the 4th of July and watching fireworks with friends right after the concert. It was an incredibly fun evening, and was definitely one of the highlights of the summer!

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at MasterWorks 2016?

I am looking forward to hearing great music excellently played by amazing faculty and students! Last summer I was blown away by the excellence of the music performances. I am also looking forward to connecting with the faculty again to learn more from them, both spiritually and musically.
